The theme of the Design indaba was a better future through design and one of the speakers which really brought that to the fore was Ben Fry. Simply put he processes data but in a way that turns the most complex of information into decipherable patterns. We live in a world where aesthetics and function seem to be adversaries, but Fry doesn’t agree with this and is pushing even scientists to re-look at how they evaluate data. He designed a program for a scientist and she said “it’s too pretty.” However a week later they all could not revert back to the old data processing methods.
